Yeah...........well...........times do change. Today us settlers still need to protect our families, only now it's against hostile criminal gangs and outlaws, police dogs and sometimes police themselves, and yes...........even the occasional bear once in awhile. Not to mention hostile lawyers who think that circumstances will never arise in which we need protecting, and if they do, the local authorities are going to be there to do the protecting. So the threat has changed. Doesn't mean we still don't have concerns about protecting ourselves. That is the underlying issue. He suggested the right arose out of the need for settlers to protect their families "against hostile Indian tribes and outlaws, wolves and bears and grizzlies and things like that."
