We pitch at the edge of the dirt circle. All the way to second grade.

As for pitching in bp, even at the Majors level we put a screen up on the grass and pitch from there. While the ball is technically leaving one's hand much slower, the closer distance means the ball gets on you that much quicker, as if it were pitched from the full 46 ft distance at a much faster speed. Yes, we also pitch from the rubber but when you factor in 12 kids times a bucket of balls each, that's several hundred pitches for us geezers. Not gonna do it that often at game speed! So we also hire guys to throw bp or alternate kids pitching from the team to a limited degree.
