For the time being, the Dems' circular firing squad is simply driving up their own negatives among independents and giving McCain the crucial advantage he would need to get in.

I figure the winning candidate gets 32% or so from his own base, two-thirds or 20% of independents and a couple of percent from the other party's base, if the vote is not a total cliffhanger again.

The worst possible result of this torturous ordeal could be losing the swing vote. Ironic, since we know those voters don't want to stay in Iraq or continue the Bush policies in general, but they could easily vote for McCain out of disgust with what the Dems are becoming.
