Well, you have better memories than I. My parents were immigrants & my mother couldn't make steam. We had this old GE refrigerator with the motor on top? It had an ice cube rack with a drip tray under it. She would put minute steaks in the drip tray (no refrigeration in the West of Ireland where she came from) & leave it there until it turned blue. Then she would cook it until it turned black. Got all the bacteria out of it. Plus anything that might have been digestible.
