I do recall Robertson and Falwell being hammered for it and apologizing soon after.

Brumar is correct, those men did apologize for saying that (after Big Media had a field day). A sizable minority does believe this. It is not hard to find people spouting it. None of these people are running for President though. While Obama didn't say it, it HAD to be asked if he believes it.

It is not controversial to say that US policy actions have consequences. Usually unintended and often very bad. It is useful to ask if US policy actions make it more likely that 911 would happen or less, if for no other reason than to learn from past mistakes. It would take a more disciplined intellect than I have (or Obama or Wright) to tease anything useful out of that murky mess.

It is a completely different matter to assert that we as a people are morally responsible for what happened that day. I give that an unequivocal no.

From what I heard, I can't tell exactly what Wright was trying to say with his "chickens coming home to roost" sermon. I will tell you I detected a tone of glee in his voice that sent shivers down my spine.

Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson said the same thing. I do not recall them getting hammered for it. And I believe Sen. Inhofe made a similar comment....

Falwell and Robertson put it in the context of social morality - that 9/11 was brought down on us by God for the sinful ways of the popular culture.

Wright put it in a political context, that we got what was coming to us from a political perspective.

And, I do recall they took some heat for it.

Because of his association with Trinity, and because he hasn't ever condemned Rev Wright's assertion that the chickens have come home to roost i.e. America deserved 9/11, the seeds of doubt are there.

If he'd brought it up as soon as the tapes appeared..........or even before, although that would have opened up a can of worms, and in the context that some people have said such things...........including his Pastor............he could have asked that a national dialogue take place so that America can explore and discuss and come to an agreement that past mistakes need correcting. It would have been a tricky proposition, but not out of the realm of possibility for one so skilled. If he'd done that with conviction, he would have connected with a lot of people, but since he didn't ...........we have to assume he concurs........America deserved 9/11 and such bad things.

Americans are supposed to elect a man who won't defend or help Americans examine or thoroughly analyze our nation, or support ALL Americans and America 100%?

If those folks said anything like that, it is one of the reasons I have said there is no difference between the Far Left and the Far Right.

BUT there is one thing to remember....it's one thing for preachers to preach trash, but it's ENTIRELY another thing altogether, for a Candidate for the President of the United States to stand even hearing that type of thing for even one "sermon".... Most of us would have made a point of walking out in the middle of such a "sermon".....let alone stay in the church for TWENTY years, and to support it with $22,000+ (that he currently admits to)
