If Obama has taken strong stands against the poor leadership of his church on these types of matters, than I am not aware of them. He certainly could have demonstrated them recently to deflect this criticism.

Diversity, in my opinion, includes the ability to accommodate several thoughts. When these bloggers say that he should have taken a stronger stand against his church leadership, then the standards of the bloggers are being forced on the people. How do we know that he is not doing something about it. He has professed time and time again that he adopts a collaborative rather than a confrontational approach.

Who are these bloggers to tell us that the only way to solve the ME problem is to remain confrontational with countries like Iran and other Arab countries as the US has been in the past. Is there an alternative collaborative way to include Syria and Iran in the dialog?

With the Rev. Wright incident, Obama has surely demonstrated his ability to bring people together and use the carrot and stick policy very wisely.

The Church pulpit is Rev. wright's domain. He decides who gets up there and what is said from there. OTOH, Obama gets to decide who should be up on the stage with him when he announced his candidacy. And it was his decision not to have Rev. Wright there.

All these incidents go to show his judgement. And this collaborative approach has paid him off

>>Lane brought up gullibility, but I think what we see in the black community is really the opposite- faulty conclusions which are the result of a virulent sense of cynicism, and a feeling (among some) that white America is completely against black America.<<

Quehebo -

What Obama has done, in the past, is to write books giving his vision of what we can do, as a nation, to overcome the prejudices and problems of the past. I'd call that taking a stand.

I would say that it's a more positive way of taking a stand than leaving his church would be. And perhaps one of the reasons he didn't leave the church is because he liked sermons like this one:

Interestingly, Mike Huckabee had some insightful comments about the whole controversy:
