The country was never intended to be a democracy. In fact democracy in its pure form is inimical to freedom and individual liberty.

Perhaps we'll have to re-learn that morsel of ancient wisdom the hard way.

But if you mean that our liberties are under siege, well sure they are. They have been plundered by every President since Wilson, with the possible exceptions of Harding and Coolidge.

Cheney's recent statement that the Bushies will continue the Iraq war regardless of public opinion again shows how fragile what is left of our democracy has become.

That's why our founding fathers came up with term limits. In their wisdom, they realized that sooner or later, some wack job would find his way into the White House. Term limits were designed to limit the damage.
