That belief is what prompted the American Revolution, and was illustrated in the opening segment of "John Adams".... The Americans of that time, were colonists in a land where Great Britain’s government ruled overall. Most of the colonists didn't want to break from Britain. I've read only 10% of the colonists became Patriots, and the rest were Tories.

However, Britain continued taxing more and more, and the colonists had no say in the government or the amount of the taxes. Tea at the time was VERY expensive, and Britain had just added more taxes to it...thus we had the Boston Tea Party. Tyranny and then Terror for some time during the Revolutionary War played a serious part, so many of them "bargained, pleaded, reasoned, talked, etc" to avoid war....but finally, it was no longer possible to do anything but overthrow the oppressor. It is indeed a miracle that we have this wonderful Land of Liberty.
