Not to me. People are terribly ignorant of things that do not interest them, and how many whites do you find who are interested in the black community? I can't remember the last time I saw people talking about the black community, except in the context of crime (how many blacks commit it, and how many are in prison), and affirmative action (isn't affirmative action horrible- and why should blacks have affirmative action?). Any other interest in the black community was minimal.

I teach the rhetoric of MLK and Malcolm X- and ever year I do I find current black speeches to put along side them, so at least I keep a bit current- but I think someone like Obama, who really wants to bridge the gap, needs to be a member of both communities- and insulting to neither, but firm about the race baiting- which I think he was.
