This country was created based on ideas, wonderful ideas. That's special. How could one not love that specialness? I have a deep love for those ideals. They still amaze me in many ways. But "loving your country" usually means pride in the current government, society, economy and culture. It becomes, "How dare you criticize your own country?!?" when one is simply criticizing something in the country or something the government is doing. That's when patriotism becomes the refuge of scoundrels. The cheerleading commissars don't want to hear about a love of ideals, they want obedience and a louder cheer for their pet causes.
