Energy storage is extremely difficult. Chemical means, i.e. batteries, is problematic because the chemistry is pretty well understood. So there isn't a whole lot of room for breakthroughs.

Which is a big problem with renewable energy as well. Both solar and wind are intermittent... so there will always be a need for a fueled power plants unless you can solve the storage issue. All sorts of ideas out there including compressing air, pumping water up hill, something with heat and salt I don't really understand... all tech to store "natural" energy when it is available and release it to turbines when it is not.

I imagine if you could jump forward 20 years you wouldn't recognize the power generation and storage.
