"on one remaining employee"

Yes... there were several (presumably not connected to each other.)

"— a contract worker with a company headed by an adviser...."

If you draw dots to try to make a connection in the case of this one contract worker (& you *assume* that he was snooping at the BEHEST of this one executive from the company he works for, which is not at all clear or indicated yet... he might have been snooping for his own interests, or for someone else's - hopefully the FBI interviews will answer that point), then it is possible that it was a 'businessman on the make', (the corporate executive) out to feather his own nest, of advantage himself in some other way.

(Would not be the first businessman --- particularly as, is the case here, the businessman is ex-CIA --- to seek competitive advantage for himself. :-)

shorty... a little more grist for the mill, on your post about the passport probe:

Seems two of the three contractors caught peeping into the senators' passport files worked for a firm who's CEO contributed to Hillary's campaign. One of the three worked for a firm that contributed to Barack's campaign.

(None of which 'proves' anything yet however about motivations, *why* the snooping and *where* the info might have been sent. Like I said earlier: the FBI interviews will have to get to the bottom of those questions....)

My earlier comment though still apply:
