"I don't like hateful screeds coming out of any church.....neither Pastor Wrights nor a fundamentalist, armageddon-focused evangelical group in the South."

me, neither. down here i've tried to separate some from others, tho. some... they just talking what they think is right, are not actually hateful people, tho the words might sound that way. only heard a couple of icky really hateful preachers.

"Yes, as a Mormon I sure have....although not in the last 20 or so years."

not in 20 years? that is good. tho do think things have changed re the perception of the mormon church. my eldest sister lives in a large town that has many mormons. she is disabled. and not much of churchy person at all. never had been. but somehow she linked up with the mormon church there and the in a sprawling metropolis they have an incredible sense of community. people call to check on her. others come to help out with shopping and cleaning. if she is in the hospital (frequent) they check on her. some call just to chat cause she is funny and interesting. am really not sure what other 'church' in such a town would give so much to her. and she even, tho she listens politely and discusses, has always made clear she is not and will never be a mormon. can i sure could never get behind the 'beliefs', but can't fault the kindness and community and caring. life is strange.

and thank you for so kindly answering my 'baiting' questions. i reread my post and i was rather... rudish. smile. i hope you know was no offence intended. nor 'challenge'.

>>We have no paid ministry (or other positions) so there's no preaching as such. As a group, we focus on being for things rather than against them. One time, about ten years ago, I asked a group of my church friends at lunch just exactly what were the scriptures that supposedly condemn homosexuality and nobody could name any, lol.<<

Kate -

There is exactly one place in the Bible where homosexuality is indeed condemned, categorically. It's in Leviticus. It goes something like "If a man shall lie down with another man as with a woman, they are an abomination." It goes on to recommend that they should be put to death.

I believe I can say without fear of contradiction, however, that the Bible says nothing about lesbians. Apparently, the Lord has no problem with them. Yet that doesn't stop some religious people from condemning lesbianism, and calling it a sin against God.

By the way, Leviticus also prescribes the death penalty, by stoning, for adultery, and lays out some dietary laws. No pork, no shellfish. The book offers specific instructions for sacrificing various animals at altars, including how to burn a cow, I think it is, in order to make "a pleasing odor" for the Lord.

It's pretty wacky stuff.
