I hereby grant you permission to add that third element of empathy. I do so because I so completely understand and sympathize with your feelings about the need for this.

I have found, though, that my ability to empathize is often viewed as weakness.

Let me, with your permission, add a third, the value of empathy.

Empathy is a component of active listening, Rambi's #2, for those communications where empathy applies.
