You can probably understand them better if you weren't involved at the time. Those who went off the "Left Edge" and realize now they were wrong still won't admit it.

Vietnam was a classic example of either go in "big," or don't go in at all. If we had a President at the time who informed the North Vietnamese in 1962 to either back off or we would mine the harbor and take out their electric plants, it would have settled into a "North/South Korea" detente without our use of troops.

Another example of what would have happened if Nixon had been elected in 1960 instead of Kennedy. A watershed election.
