Berman starts by sounding the usual liberal themes but he then turns on the liberals:

The entire sequence of events may suggest that America is uniquely destined to do the wrong thing. All too likely! But it may also suggest that America is not the fulcrum of the universe, and extremist ideologies have prospered because of their own ability to adapt and survive — their strength, in a word.


The idea that America is not responsible for everything in the world has become a startling statement in leftist corners. I think Berman is still holding the flag for old fashioned liberalism, which has some attachment to liberal values.
