Massive inflation if they print the money to pay up, a likely depression (certainly in the west) if they default -- as a debtor nation without any savings, the US unfortunately doesn't have Option #3 available to it the way the Japanese did in 1990 (i.e. keeping everything on the books of the big banks for the next 20 years and pretending nothing happened) -- in the present US case, its creditors are going to come-a-calling sooner or later, just as sure as Mastercard or Visa would eventually get around to calling you if you stopped paying your bills
