That's why our respective navels weren't seeing eye to eye on the conscience thing.

I still maintain there are huge chunks of the world who care so little about whether they love their country that it is mostly irrelevant to them. It is equivalent to asking most Americans if they care about speaking a foreign language or not. They would be better off for it, but really don't notice much either way.

Since morality is not something that is part of my world view, my closest notion being ethics

Do you mean ethics as in formal ethical rules of an organization or profession, or ethics meaning the philosophy of morality and moral ideas.

The later is related to the idea of morality (although as a broad area of philosophy, it would include all sorts of idea including "morality is subjective", morality is based on culture", "morality is an illusion" etc.). The former might not be in theory but often is.

Ethics can also be a synonym for morality, but obviously that wasn't your meaning.
