The domestic companies see that there are little frequency range left in the European region that is required for DVB-H, and that the standard is not compulsory for European industries, but just a recommendation. According to the industry on March 24th, there is little frequency left that can be used in the European region. The frequency of 400 to 800 MHz required for DVB-H is not available at the moment, and can be secured only in 2010 or 2012 when analogue TV broadcasting is not available any more. On the other hand, DMB technology, which was independently developed by domestic companies, uses low frequency range, which is not difficult to obtain. DMB service is now available in Germany, Italy, France, UK, and Spain among the European countries, while DVB-H is available in some parts of Italy only. Therefore, domestic terrestrial DMB companies view that they have time for preparation while DVB-H companies make their own preparation for 3 to 4 years. In addition, there is another advantage of price, in that it costs more to set up infrastructure for DVB-H service than DMB infrastructure. Executive Director Kyung-won Lee of onTimetek said, “The standard adoption is not compulsory, but just a recommendation. We don’t see any problem in entering the market, because both DMB and DVB-H are official standards of ETSI.” In particular, DMB is the only standard that can have opportunities in the market, as other competing standards such as MediaFLO of Qualcomm and One Seg of Japan are excluded from the ETSI standard. Under the circumstances, domestic equipment makers are trying diverse ways to seize the opportunity this time. One of such efforts is DMB Alliance which was formed to seek business opportunities in overseas markets and whose members are DMB-related organizations and 30 companies including Telecommunication Technology Association, Pixtree, and onTimetek. Chairman Chan-yeop Yoon of DMB Alliance said, “We believe this will be rather a good opportunity for us. We’re now having consultation with several countries, and there will be tangible results next month.”
