What up with all the thumbs on the scale?

A quick search discovered by Politico's Hollywood main man, Jeffrey Ressner, shows at least 5 pubs in recent weeks have all used the catch-phrase du jour.

Guardian Unlimited, Feb. 28: There's no doubt that Obama is an attractive candidate, eloquent in ways that Clinton just can't match. Still, it hasn't hurt that the media have had their collective thumb on the scale ever since the Iowa caucuses.

Huffington Post, Feb. 28: But that doesn't mean the Republicans won't continue to try to use Obama's response to Russert's "gotcha" question against him in the future. It was typical Russert hatchet work. Another example of his greasy thumb weighing heavy on the already-unbalanced scale of mainstream media political reporting. . .

Time, March 4: Press critics can decide how much truth is in Clinton's claims that the media put its thumb on the scale for Obama.
