When you are testifying under oath in a legal proceeding, lying is a crime. There is no statute that says well, we'll decide if the lie is important or not.

Do you think you should get to lie to the police if you don't think what you did was that important?

Without that clear standard, swearing to tell the truth becomes a joke. You think the current administration's officials would hesitate to lie about things they don't think should be a crime? Or almost any administration?

We really don't want to go down that road. Let people tell the truth when they are under oath and live with the consequences. We don't end up with stinky messes that way.
