It Lacked the Added Virtue of Being True

Power Line

In support of her claim that eight years as First Lady qualify her as a foreign policy expert, Hillary Clinton has told dramatic stories about landing in Bosnia under sniper fire and having to run for cover. I'm not sure that, even if true, this would endow her with much diplomatic skill, but it has become clear that Hillary's story is false.

That isn't remarkable. What is striking is that CBS News, a long-time Democratic Party stronghold, has exposed Hillary as a fabulist:

<<< Me: It's likely because they want Obama to win. >>>

It would be nice if we could take this as a sign that CBS is becoming politically neutral, but it seems more likely that CBS's willingness to expose Hillary's mendacity is a function of her supposed "conservatism" as a Democratic Presidential candidate.

UPDATE: The Clinton campaign says that Mrs. Clinton misspoke.

How Can You Tell When Hillary is Lying? ....

By Texas Rainmaker on Clinton

.... Her lips are moving.

It’s ironic that one of the biggest liars ever to seek the presidency made these comments at the university named for the President who “could not tell a lie”.

<<< I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base. But it was a moment of great pride for me to visit our troops, not only in our main base as Tuzla, but also at two outposts where they were serving in so many capacities to deactivate and remove landmines, to hunt and seek out those who had not complied with the Dayton Accords and put down their arms, and to build relationships with the people that might lead to a peace for them and their children >>>

Sniper fire? Ran with their heads down?

Here’s a news report from that trip in 1996. See what you think.

Hillary Defends Against 'Swiftboating' on Bosnia

By Scott Ott on swiftboat
ScrappleFace
News Fairly Unbalanced. We Report. You Decipher.

(2008-03-25) — After a CBS News video appeared on YouTube contradicting former First Lady Hillary Clinton’s account of her 1996 landing in Bosnia “under sniper fire”, a spokesman for Sen. Clinton’s presidential campaign said unnamed critics were trying to “swiftboat” her “in a fashion reminiscent of what they did to John Kerry in 2004.” [Click to View CBS Video]

Sen. Kerry, a professional Vietnam war veteran, faced relentless questions during his own White House bid that were sparked by fellow swiftboat crewman who alleged that his Vietnam service was not as harrowing and valorous as his own medal applications and stump speeches implied.

The Clinton campaign source said CBS News had apparently edited out the sniper fire audio from its video clips, making it look like First Lady Clinton and her daughter Chelsea were greeted at the landing site by a little, pony-tailed Bosnian girl who kissed Mrs. Clinton on the cheeks.

“Even without the audio, you can see Hillary and Chelsea ducking toward the little girl as bullets whistle over their heads,” said the anonymous campaign staffer. “The other people standing nearby were so paralyzed by fear that all they could do was smile. The little girl practically leaped into Hillary’s arms for protection from the barrage of searing hot lead.”

In an effort to avoid such a swiftboating, the Clinton campaign will reportedly air a new commercial which claims to include the original audio recorded that day.

Video: Here’s Chelsea spinning Tuzla

By Michelle Malkin • March 25, 2008 01:23 PM

Thanks to reader Robert M., here’s the video of Chelsea Clinton’s Tuzla remarks that I mentioned this morning.

wishtv.com

You’ll find the exchange in the last two minutes of the WISH-TV clip. Indeed-ly doodly, just as reader Christopher e-mailed me, Chelsea’s response to how she survived the “sniper fire” was to disingenously pay tribute to the military and Secret Service. She then wriggles out of the uncomfortable situation by chastising the questioner for focusing on the past instead of on “today” and how her heroic mom would fix the Balkans in the present. Because, like, you know, um, her mom has unquestioned, courageous leadership experience on these issues, you know.

Transcript:

<<< QUESTION: Can you tell us how you and your mom avoided the sniper fire in Bosnia in March of 1996 (audience members groan)?

CHELSEA: Uh, we were well-protected by our United States military and the United States Secret Service.

QUESTION: Was there sniper fire going out at the airport? Did they have to cancel the welcoming ceremony there at the airport?

CHELSEA: Well sir, (nervous laugh), I think that my mother’s on record as having talked about this and I support what she said. I mean, I was there as well and I’m so honored (puts hand to heart) that I was there (audience applause).

But sir, I mean, I’m happy to talk about the current state of the Balkans and what my mother says about the current state of affairs because I think that most people here are interested in what we’re going to do about the world today and the world tomorrow. >>>

Poor girl. Poor, poor girl. She can’t help her DNA.

But you know, it’s only nature that Clintonian whoppers will slip out of the mouth when you, your mom, and your dad speak “millions of words a day!”

Speaking of which, here’s mom “misspeaking” again.
