Dude, cease and desist with your warming

Planet Gore @ NRO

MTV's movie blog reported on Friday that Keanu Reeves, who thinks deep thoughts, is involved in a remake of the 50's sci-fi film "The Day the Earth Stood Still." [I think I'm required to call it a "classic," but some things are just "old."] This time around, the alien Klaatu threatens to destroy—oh, let's let Keanu tell it:

<<< “The first one was borne out of the cold war and nuclear détente. Klaatu came and was saying cease and desist with your violence. If you can’t do it yourselves we’re going to do it. That was the film of that day,” Reeves explained. “The version I was just working on, instead of being man against man, it’s more about man against nature. My Klaatu says that if the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth survives. I’m a friend to the earth.” >>>

Big word that "détente." The best line — with an even bigger word — comes after the reporter complains about the robot Gort in the original (who looked like the Tinman from the Wizard of Oz) and expresses the hope that it will be updated to take advantage of the latest CG developments:

<<< “Hey man, don’t put that tin man down! That was iconoclastic!” Reeves protested. “[But] yes, we have another version of the [robot].” >>>

Oh please oh please let it look like Al Gore.

UPDATE 2: A reader asks: "What's this thing going to be called? The Day Gaia Got Her Groove Back?"

The Forest Lake principal said there had been complaints
from "parents and others." Apparently the "others" are
denizens of the Democratic Underground fever swamp.

UPDATE [to the Powel Line post this post is linked to]:

Katherine Kersten, Kathryn Lopez, Hugh Hewitt, and Uncle Jimbo pierce the fog of the Star Tribune article.

JOHN adds: From Kathy Kersten's post:

<<< At “Democratic Underground Forums,” there was an announcement of a press conference by various unidentified groups opposing the Vets for Freedom appearance. The announcement exhorted “Veterans for Peace” to oppose the appearance and listed contact info for Massey; school board president Bill Bresin, and the Forest Lake Area Schools district office. The post expressed “outrage” that Vets for Freedom was going to meet with students to “indoctrinate them on the joys of war.”

Shame on Forest Lake High administrators for caving to political pressure under the guise of preventing political pressure. Apparently, they only understand the sort of political pressure exerted by left-wing anti-war groups. >>>

The Forest Lake principal said there had been complaints from "parents and others." Apparently the "others" are denizens of the Democratic Underground fever swamp. It would be interesting to know how many of those who objected to the veterans were "others" rather than parents.

It's hard to discern any consistent standard for who and what is too "political" for Minnesota's public schools. Last year, the high school that my children attend invited Al Franken to speak to the National Honor Society. If Al Franken isn't too "political," how can Pete Hegseth and his fellow veterans be?
