i am shocked you want to take away a citizens vote because of hard times. Yes, John, you're right. I hadn't thought it through. People who are having hard times ARE the ones who should get to vote, so the hard times can be corrected for them. I now say, "No one gets to vote unless he (or she, for those who are politically correct) can PROVE that she (ditto) is an illegal alien." Those hard-working souls are clearly the ones who can decide what is best for this Country. OK, seriously, I'm not at all sure it would be an injustice to disenfranchise those on welfare, whatever their reason is to be on it. Our capitalist system, at least for now, provides motivation for citizens to work hard to get qualified for ever better paying jobs, for the rewards that come with it. Hopefully, NO ONE who is on welfare (well, most) will stay on it permanently, and enfranchisement could certainly be one incentive to take the steps necessary to get off it. On the other hand, if we continue as we are, we may soon be in a situation, if we're not already, where those who are not productive (i.e., not taxpayers) outnumber those who are. I don't think that is, or will be, in the best interests of this Country.
