There were only a few prominent Dixiecrat types who ultimately joined the Republican party (Helms and Thurmond). I think most remained Democrats their whole lives. Robert Byrd was a Klansman, fought civil rights, fought putting a black on the SC and it hasn't hurt him or the Democrats. Al Gore's Dad never left the Democratic party, nor did Bill Clinton's mentor, Fulbright.

As for the swing to the Republican party by run of the mill southern whites, a similar swing happened with most northern big-city ethnic groups (Jews being a rare exception) and was more driven by the Democratic party being moved to the left.
