I don't know how much smaller you mean by "much smaller", but a much smaller population could be negative in an economic sense. The transition if not very slow would be hard, and during and after the transition you would have less ability to have the same level of specialization/competition/trade.

I watched a show about the population disappearing suddenly. I don't remember the title. I wonder if it was the same show. Did they have a segment about the Hoover dam, and a segment about what happened after people left the area around Chernobyl?
