Good article. It's funny. Back in my chicago days, we made the same type of case for post vietnam world. I remember clearly the back of the napkin notes regarding vietnam and prerequisites for future democracy like full belly, strong govt, nationalism. etc. Problem there has been, although the regime (eg china/vietnam) may have dumped the communist eomeconomic system, they hold on to the power when we thought they would have already caved in to transparent democratic institutins and multi party govt with respect for indy rights. Check the news pages today in the NYT on iraq govt attacking al sadr and pakistan taking a different road than the US vis a vis al queada.
