Nobody is "entitled" to anything. You just asked what did Broadcom get from Zyray. Given what Broadcom got for their power control patent, I am not surprised that they may well have wanted the world for their Zyray IPR.

My take on Broadcom has remain steady from the day I first understood what they got from Zyray. To this day, I still believe Broadcom does not have a competitive 3G offering and therefore has no real interest in consumating a 3G licencing deal. I suspect Qualcomm was not interested in just a 3G deal as they felt a need to also cover off their 4G MIMO requirements.

Over the last year, both company positions have morphed, slightly. As you noted, Qualcomm did their OFDMA deal with Nortel for MIMO technology and also beefed up internal resources in that area with Airgo. Their Bluetooth acquisition also seem somewhat strategic and I'd be surprised if all those deals weren't directly targeted at getting around Broadcom patents.

Eventually Broadcom is going to need some sort of 3G (HSPA) licence. Then again, maybe they'll just elect to sell their spinner chip technology to all the GSM manufactures who will naturally migrant over to adding an UMTS capability after 2010.

All guesses on my behalf. In most negotiations, folks usually get exactly what they bargain for, eventually. It all just takes time and time takes the side of no one party.
