Interesting you mention that. LBJ of course gave us the Great Society - lots and lots of government spending. Then we had the Viet-Nam spending ramp up. It was all done with printed money.

I think we find ourselves in the same situation today. The war/social spending sequence might be reversed today, but it doesn't matter. The magnitude s probably larger vis-a-vis today. Furthermore there appears to be no end in sight either on the war or social spending. After bailing out housing, we have to bail out social security and MediCare....again. MasterCard hadn't been conceived back then, and that generation was appalled by it. At least my parents were. Spend something other than cash!?!?!?! Are you nuts??? Come to think of it, I can recall that concept slowly becoming more and more socially acceptable. I think it had something to do with the onset of rock and roll.

Public debt is up 400 billion dollars at midpoint of fiscal year. If you take out SS & Medicare spending, the rest of the government seems to be spending 60 percent than it takes in.
