It may be more a matter of priorities when looking at how blue collar voters and less than college-educated voters reach their decision.

Different priorities and different buttons that the pols and campaign consultants can push. McCain has a good chance to keep the South against another candidate like Gore or Kerry (which is what I consider Hillary in national perceptions) because he will play the security/patriotism/values buttons.

Obama is vulnerable on those too, but he brings charisma and a new kind of message, much like Bill Clinton did in his elections. The electoral maps in 1992 and 1996 are very different from 2000 and 2004.

Since Hillary has such high negatives, cracking that bastion is nigh near impossible.
