Probably among the worst things we could do would be to be perceived by the Iraqis as taking sides in an inter-Shiite political competition.

(Anyone else notice that the 'crackdown' started in Basra --- from which 80% of Iraq's oil is exported... perhaps a fifth or so is officially 'un-recorded' or 'off the books', siphoned off, the area upon which the central government is dependent for most of it's revenues on?)
