OT:

I guess people just have different experiences in different places. I was treated very well in Montréal (except for a serving of mussels that had definitely gone over the hill). I was even able to impress my pre-teen daughter visibly for the first time ever by carrying on a casual conversation (I have spent two years in France and many years before studying French and being coached in French phonetics).

I love France, but it is certainly possible, maybe inevitable, that one will run afoul of some railroad official, customs officer, or custodian of culture, who will display a rather Jansenist presumption of personal divine-inspired infallibility and who may also even be carrying a pistol. I have had submachine guns pointed at my stomach in France, too. But once you get away from those types, it's a great civilization.
