Maybe they trust their governments more than we trust ours.

Think about this paradox for a minute, you are clearly unhappy with how the Federal government has handled its one Constitutionally mandated duty, which is to provide for the common defense. You've made yourself absolutely clear on this subject.

Yet, your reaction to their failure in that area is to vote to put them in charge of yours and everyone else's healthcare!?

Doesn't that seem like a strange thing to do in light of how you feel about the government?

"...Provide healthcare and a retirement for their citizens..."

well, i agree with this. for me, it's about caring for others...social responsibility. kinda the same as paying bills on time, opening doors for someone who is not able to do so, etc. has it been lost by selfish, don't worry be happy boomers and their offspring? maybe. is it that US society is so complex and confusing that some of us can only focus on self in order to cope? well, maybe i'm OT.

Australia provides healthcare but not really retirement. The government forces people to save for retirement. There is a "aged pension" that is means tested but it is less than typical US social security payouts. The non-means tested pension in Britain is also very low.
