The top tax rate in the US is 35%, so there is a difference, especially in states with no income tax, like my state of Florida. At $180K, the tax rate here is 28%. As you say, the higher middle classes pay a lot of the taxes. In the US, what helps the rich is low taxes on dividends and capital gains (15%), from which they derive much of their income. That's what makes billionaires pay a much lower percentage of their income in taxes than secretaries.
