7:50AM Samsung tips 10% sales growth in 2008; below forecast (UK:SMSN) by Michael Kitchen
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Samsung Electronics (UK:SMSN) Chief Executive Officer Yun Jong-yong told a shareholders' meeting Friday he expects the South Korean tech giant to post sales growth of 10% this year, below the 15% the company had projected in January, reports said. "Business conditions this year look rather gloomy because of rising oil prices and the continued fluctuation of exchange rates spurred by the U.S. subprime woes," Yun was quoted as saying by the Korea Times. The Bloomberg news agency said an earlier survey of analysts had expected Samsung to achieve a 14% rise in sales.

7:20AM Nokia could post low shipments this quarter: broker (NOK) by Aude Lagorce
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Nokia Corp. (NOK) may post low shipments of mobile phones in the first quarter, Societe Generale analysts said in a note to clients published Friday. It expects Nokia to ship just 107 million handsets compared to consensus forecasts for shipments of 115 million. The broker added that the world's largest maker of mobile phones could also report unexpectedly weak average selling prices this quarter because of the combined effect of lower sales of top-end handsets and significant price pressure. "We believe the top end of the portfolio may be fading due to both the age of the portfolio (the N95 is now over a year old) and also increasing touchscreen competition," Societe Generale said. It added that Nokia may be at risk of losing its dominant position in that segment.

[Harry: Confirmation of weaker consumer demand. The seize mentality is starting to takeover. Despite the lowered interest rates, people are starting to concentrate on lowering debt and spending less. High gas combined with pending job layoffs annoucements in the coming months will probably reinforce that kind of think. ]
