If US citizens included some share of SS then we'd look a bit better off. However, I wouldn't be banking on that slush fund being around for my own retirement.

I sold out and retired about 8 years ago. I always assumed that the SSA would be broke by the time I retired so I took care of my own retirement. Surprise!!! I have now gotten back all I paid into FICA. I am in good health and may live long enough to get the lost interest - but I would not count on it.

Yes in 2001-2 Australians didn't seem so wealthy, though still likely ahead of the US at the median.
