Trailing Barack Obama in delegates, and faced with the mathematical impossibility of pulling ahead of him in the handful of contests left, Sen. Clinton is in dire need of some kind of meltdown in which Obama would collapse in the polls against presumptive GOP nominee John McCain. Instead, her worse nightmare has materialized. Last week, she was caught fabricating what took place as she arrived in Bosnia as first lady in 1996. "I remember landing under sniper fire," she recounted during a speech on Iraq. "There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base." Later, in a press conference, she reiterated these claims emphatically. "There was no greeting ceremony, and we basically were told to run to our cars," Hillary said. "Now, that is what happened." Unfortunately for the Clintons, we now live in the age of blogs and YouTube. Videotape from CBS News showing what actually happened has now been seen by the multitudes, and news spread far and wide. Accompanied by her daughter, Chelsea, the then-president's wife could not be seen doing any running, either with head up or down. There was no indication of any dangers from sniper fire. And the greeting ceremony Hillary claims was canceled could be seen happening, with the first lady greeting an 8-year-old girl. Hillary's campaign reacted with the response that the senator had simply "misspoken" — and they had no more to say about it. As first lady, she had traveled on scores of trips around the world; perhaps, they would have us believe, she got Bosnia confused with somewhere else. But a first lady braving bullets would have been covered widely by the media as a major event. No one remembers any such incident — because nothing of the kind ever took place. So how on earth could Hillary remember such a thing happening? What possible explanation can there be except that she was trying to delude the voters into believing she has experience being in a war zone? Now that sweeping the lie under the rug has failed, she shrugs, "So I made a mistake." According to her, "That happens. It proves I'm human — which, you know, for some people is a revelation." The military seemed unimpressed. Retired Maj. Gen. Walter Stewart, former head of the Pennsylvania National Guard, told the New York Post: "She is insulting the command in its entirety." And the officer who piloted the military aircraft on which Hillary arrived told the Rusty Humphries radio show, "Not only were there no bullets flying around" when they landed in Bosnia, "there wasn't a bumblebee flying around." Hillary does indeed seem to have made a "mistake" — an even bigger falsehood that may cost her what she wants most.
