The figure I have seen for cost of economic stimulus package is 125 billion. Here is an article that has the various programs and their cost, and this says 161 billion. Some stuff was cut from the house package when it went to the senate, I believe.

I'm not a big fan of bailouts myself, but the reality is when you've spent such a colossal sum in just a few years on war and pork, the consitutency feels completely disconnected from any fiscal solvency needs.

This 160 billion is small potatoes, its roughly 5 mos on Iraq if you include a lot of the residual costs of iraq. But the real problem is people (and I'm sure some on congress) are thinking "this idiot is going to spend us into bankruptcy, we'd better take out what little money we can for ourselves".

That kind of disconnect from the government is going to be hard to control, especially since the baby boom retirement is coming. It was something we had a problem with in the 70s.
