Its not a matter of hoping.....its about being realistic.

Course the surge has nothing to do with Basra. It was held by the Brits who adopted the liberal prescription of pulling out and turning it over to the militias which are supplied by Iran.

Uh...the militia causing the problems is based in Sadr City in Baghdad. Beyond that, there are grievances that have developed over hundreds of years under colonial rule and then under an iron fisted dictator that have never been resolved.

I suspect the Iraqi army under Iraq's elected govt will be able to handle the militias. And taking them on will be necessary.

If so, then we can pull out.
