The long term solution planned for Iraq is IMO to use special forces with Iraq army and police plus airpower plus a rapid reaction force. This should be able to overcome the insurgent elements which seem to change. First they were Saddams old groups , then AQ and other terrorists, now Shia SAdr again. This uprising is good because it tests are plans to withdraw leaving behind SF, a rapid reaction force and airpower.

We had a short discussion about that on another thread.

I think the violence weakens McCain's candidacy. If things seem to just get better and better than people accept the idea of staying in Iraq, but anytime things seem to get worse than a significant number of people take that as a sign that things are hopeless.
