I suspect that statistical analysis of gene information will be better able to show which characteristics evolved first and in wha order.

We might perhaps roughly eyeball the genetic change in time, once we actually know what the genetic change is (another problem BTW), but there is very little hope of actually knowing if the genetic change was driven by any specific behavioral change, such as the upright walking between forest patches, or a shift towards monogamy, etc. Behaviors don't fossilize very well.
