You can get a credit rating without using credit (ie credit cards or car payments). If you rent and pay your utilities on time, you will build a credit history. It may not be easy, but it can be done.

As a society, the use of "easy" credit is what has caused much of the problem that we currently have. We have not been taught that we can say no to our kids or to ourself. We "need it know" and "I deserve it" is the mantra of this generation.

I am glad that your parents taught you about paying your debt and honoring your obligations. That is something that we all need to do with our kids and grandkids (someday I hope).
