Report: IMF Lowers U.S. Growth Forecast to 0.5% From 1.5%

The International Monetary Fund has cut its global economic growth outlook for this year from an earlier forecast of 4.1%, while lowering its estimate for the U.S. to 0.5% from 1.5%, Die Zeit reported, citing a draft copy due to be released next week.

According to the report, the U.S. economy will contract for at least two straight quarters in 2008 because of the financial market crisis and the weak housing market, which will reduce consumer spending.

The IMF also slashed its economic growth estimate for Germany to 1.2% versus 1.5%.
