"Actually, partitioning Iraq always appealed to me. I always thought it would improve our odds of getting what we wanted with at least one of the groups."

Yes, I agree that the US would gain much if the locals arrived at a decision to 'partition' themselves into new nations... or even just into a very loose federal structure, with most power devolved to the regional governments.

(Obviously you were referring to the Kurdish lands --- which I agree are most likelky to provide the US with whatever 'basing' rights we are after... and which are located most strategicly in the region.)

Still... I believe that much greater benefits would accrue to the US were the Persian + Iraqi Shia / Saudi & Gulf Arab Sunni conflict to be more sharply focused as an 'intramural' affair... and with the Westerners and other foreigners butting out.

The worst of radicals would be occupied with each other (in a simmering conflict which has no obvious military solution... the only solution which could work would involve the actual transformation,/i> of their *own* societies and worldviews.)

Still, we would directly benefit by saving *hundreds of Billions* in expenses that we no longer needed to spend....

And, world oil prices would likely moderate, providing our economy a similar sized boost of perhaps hundreds of billions.

And, by holding true to our core beliefs in Democracy, rule of law, Capitalism, the sovereign right of self-determination... we would be positioned on the moral high ground once again --- ready to reap the numerous benefits.
