"Companies like Texas Instruments which had committed to foundries are finding out that life isn't always greener. So you may see some larger players getting back into IC mfg as the foundry model isn't all that they want. The next up cycle may be a real big one. "

That is a BIG reason I keep holding IBM and Intel... my "eye stocks."

I was at HP when they/we started to diversify out of doing our own chips... and I thought then that EVENTUALLY it might come back to haunt them when there is someday a big need for chips and you end up paying through the nose to get them.

I think the really big players own pieces of fabs so they have a way to get key components, but HP, Motorola and others have split up so often... not sure they have any access or skills left in house so they have to rely on others.
