DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.'s (CLF) Cliffs North American Coal LLC unit declared force majeure on coal shipments from its Pinnacle Mine in Pinnacle, W. Va., after running into a sandstone intrusion at the mine.

The company said a longwall plow is mining through an intrusion into the coal seam, slowing coal production and "significantly" reducing shipments. The company estimated it is about 25% through the fault area and will be in "difficult mining" for two to three months.

Cliffs' 2008 metallurgical coal production will fall about 100,000 tons for every 30 days of mining in the fault area.

The intrusion is part of the same geology that slowed production in August.
