Less identification as a subgroup that wants to be a power base would make the country stronger. Democrats need identity politics because there are no common values that unite them. (Well, the lust for power seems to be a common democrat value.)

Republicans generally agree on a few core values like the Right to Life and fiscal prudence. Because they cannot understand the values that unite Republicans, democrats need to treat those values as being invalid identity politics. We will see if Republican candidates understand that the results of 2006 reflect core Republican voters dissatisfaction with Congresses failure to remain true to core values.
