Of course, most western media outlets are declaring Muqtada al-Sadr and Iran as the victors of Operation Cavalry Charge. Nothing could be furthest from the truth.

It is astonishing that al-Sadr could be declared the victor in this skirmish when he ended up caving. Some have tried to make the case that he won, since he will now be able to re-group and come back stronger. While that is possible, whether he is strengthened by the incident remains to be seen.

If al Sadr was doing so well, why did he cave? That's the big unanswered question. Why did he choose not to fight it out here and now?

Brumar, it's amazing to see two very different conclusions arise as a result of the Basra engagements. I would have believed the MSM's conclusion, mainly on their coherency and unity, if the notion of Sadr "winning by withdrawing" didn't smell.

Seems like the MSM is listening all too eagerly to the insurgents declaring a pyrrhic victory, much like Hezbollah did when they fired rockets into Israel and "survived" the counterattacks.
