If the people elect a long term member of the leftist anti-American counter-culture, the people will finally get the government they deserve. At that point, I'll stop worrying about the country and focus more on personal and family security.

It would appear the Country will get a fairly clear referendum on Iraq in November. McCain vs. either Obama or Hillary.....although each of them has moved away from the Daily Kos approch of immediate withdrawal (as they should).

Once in Iraq, we as citizens are still entitled to critique our government's policy. Remember, this is not a war against a foreign government with the goal of toppling that regime. This is now a supportive effort, supporting and bolstering an elected government in Iraq until it can manage on its own. Recent events indicate we are being used (again) by the factions to consolidate their own internal power. The position of our government vs. the Iraq government (support, financing,) are legitimate evaluations of foreign policy, just as it is with Israel aor any other nation.

If Sadr ends up governor of Basra then he becomes even more a legitimate official within that government. If we support that government, we support him. If he exercise his power in ways that are against our interests, we have to decide if we are going to then oppose the government of Iraq or continue to support it...on democratic principles.

This sceanario is very possible. It could be on the horizon in October. We should prepare for its possibility and not act like "no one could have seen this coming" (the most infuriating phrase of the current Administration).

Many have posted on this thread reasonaed analysis showing the danger of the new Iraq state moving ever closer to Iran and Iran's dominance under the umbrella of our democratic initiatives. We should think about it...and not simply pretend we have no voice or concerns because troops are in the field.
