If McCain continues peddling the muddle-headed nonsense he has been talking about Iraq for the next eight months, then yes, he will become more of a joke than Dole.

McCain clearly has only the vaguest grasp of economics. It's steadily becoming clear that his grasp of foreign policy is utterly hazy too.

My own calculation is that McCain's chances against Obama right now are about 2/1, and I don't see them improving once the real election campaign starts. That's nothing to do with hopes and dreams, just hard cash.

Well, the great thing about this debate is that we'll know within 7 months! :)

I don't think running against Republicans will be a picnic. It will be rougher than running against Hillary. However, I've been watching McCain on his campaign trail, in part, because I liked him so long ago, and I've found him to be a deeply flawed candidate. Whether one plans to vote for him or not, McCain makes almost daily comments on issues that prove to be very embarrassing. He's not getting called on much of it, other than the 100 years in Iraq comment, because Obama and Hillary are tearing each other apart right now. However, when Obama is free to run against McCain exclusively, McCain will give Obama plenty of ammo against him.
